The dark night of the soul

Place: the Dome

Poison: cappuccino

Favorite Things: Carrot cake

I have recently become so aware of something that is plaguing many people in my life.

The tyranny of loneliness.

It’s so heart breaking to me, that people can have 500 friends on Facebook, yet not have a one friend they can sit and have a cup of coffee and a decent conversation with.

We text people rather than call, we Facebook message family rather than sit down to dinner and we apply for significance via a friend request rather than a meaningful encounter.

I was single for a really long time through my twenties and early thirties and the night times were the hardest.

In my career I was hitting major goals and was learning and growing and extremely fulfilled. My family relationships were strong and challenging. I had many friends and could easily pull together a party of one hundred people in short notice….yet I often cried myself to sleep.

The bible clearly states that it is not good that man be alone.

So how come many people with the deep desire for relationship remain single.

I’m not sure about the answer to this difficult question however as I read the Lenten journey I realise that Jesus a single  man, felt and endure these times of isolation and loneliness.

He pulled away from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, remove this cup from me. But please, not what I want. What do you want?” At once an angel from heaven was at his side, strengthening him. He prayed on all the harder. Sweat, wrung from him like drops of blood, poured off his face. (Luke 22:41-44 MSG)

The only advice I can give from my own experience and life is to reach out to a Man, who truly understands the pain we experience. It doesnt make sense, yet he truly has answered the questions that plagued those dark nights of my soul.

Also continue to reach out and ask for help. No matter how lonely you feel, take time to reach out and ask someone, anyone to acknowlege the place you find yourself in.

My prayer is that your heartache is lightened this Easter, by a Saviour who asked his Dad to take the weight from him, yet walked on towards his death, so that you and I could experience freedom today. Freedom to live unburdened life in eternity with the creator of the world.

Freedom is my prayer for you today.

Freedom in the midst of the dark night of your souls.
