capture 2: chapter 25

laundry day

It is the most mundane chore that can be turned into an adventure ‘amazing race’ style. Add a language barrier and a task together and you have trouble.

The laundry at the bottom of our accommodation is closed for a Thai public holiday and I am on my way to the beach for a few days and desperate for some clean clothes.

So the adventure of my laundry with amazing race proportions began!

capture 2: chapter 24

spent

Today was the concert and the final day of class for the creative camp. We poured out so much energy in teaching this morning and then setting up for tonight’s concert. Most of the team didn’t have a break at all, working through morning till night to get all the displays set up.

From DVDs that would not print, to dodgy Thai cables that spark with electricity, to children banging the gate begging to be let in, it was the most breathtaking night. The children performed their pieces that they have learnt over the last couple of weeks and to watch them achieve success was heartening.

KFG- roadside lovin’

There is this one roadside stall that we are obsessed with and we have called her cooking stand, KFG (Kentucky Fried Gung). The lady that sets up her stall every day at 6pm is the most delightful lady and she is always so excited when we show up.

For less than a dollar, you get four pieces of chicken and some sticky rice that we absolutely love. Less than a coffee!

favourite things

Amongst the sweat from a humid Bangkok eve, we sat in a large circle this evening and shared the high points and low points of our trip so far. There were many laughs and a few tears, as we took time to contemplate the reality of the poverty we are immersed in during our stay here.

It made me think of the fantastic tradition from my family and my work of toasts, an important time of recognition of things that have moved us from the week. The time taken to be still, to encourage and reflect is not something that comes naturally.

capture 2: chapter 21

by any other

Today in the spray-painting class as the students tagged their names over and over, I thought about names and how much they can place worth or degrade people.

While the students are playing football (soccer) at the community centre, there is a DJ that yells out names at the players. For the thai culture this is very normal. In fact it is offensive if you say that a baby is beautiful, you must call the baby ugly as a part of their natural daily routine.

What names have defined your life?

This is an opportunity to live beyond that which has tried to limit and contain you.
