capture2: chapter 15

belief

As a little girl shifts the mouse on my laptop as I write, with hip-hop booming through crazy crackling speakers and mosquito bites me; I am filled with such sadness.

The children I am meeting daily here, are told everyday from their culture and family they will never be anything…

Poverty is not about money it is about oppression and these children are oppressed in every way, but most devastatingly in the area of belief.

They are constantly supressed and given the least of opportunities.

What does it take for someone to believe?

Sudoko: problem solving slum style

Today was the first day of the creative arts camp and it was chaotic. From sick team members, to violence overnight in the slum, the children sauntered in after a hard night on the town. Anj Barker, who we are partnering with to run this creative camp at the community centre in the middle of the slum, is the most the amazing woman.

capture 2: chapter 13

love thy neighbour

Walking through Patpong this evening, the red light prostitution district of Thailand, children selling themselves, teenagers offering their wares, I was so aware that I am far from my café served life with a long mac on the side.

How can I ever be the same when I hear that a child I met today hadn’t eaten for 10 days, when I got annoyed at 9pm this evening because I hadn’t yet filled my overstuffed appetite?

capture 2: chapter 12

poles apart

The extremes of culture shock one faces in international travel is bad enough, but multiply it one hundred fold, in the same country when the levels of poverty and materialism are so evidently smashed together.

The Thai way is so chilled out and laid back, so seeing the money hungry, billboard clad consumerism of ‘the West’ being touted as a compass point for success breaks my heart.

Walking through the slums of Klong Toey today, with echoes of televisions sounds booming, we encountered kids who had been wearing the same clothes all week, (not because they wanted too!).

diversity

We are all so unique, we were designed with purpose but also with difference. From our colour of our skin, to our size, to our strengths and weaknesses we are all so different.

You were born different.
