Food Waste

Place: Lounge Room

Poison: diet coke

Favourite Things: tivo and masterchef!!

Lately I have been really intrigued by the dumpster diving craze (oprah, sbs doco, EPYC perth) and have also been really reminded about food waste and how we can be more creative with our meals and food, so we are not wasting food. Also I have been really challenged to cut down my food miles and buy local to support the local economy.

So firstly to do that I have been buying my food and meat direct from farmers markets and also straight from the growers. The two that I go two are Mt claremont famers market every saturday at Mt claremont primary school and the spud shed in Rockingham when I visit my mum and dad. I love the vibe and the ideas you get when buying farmer direct, you get more in season and can create your menu with a seasonal flare.

Secondly lowering our food waste is also really important and here are some to get you creatively started:

  1. When grocery shopping, plan your meals for the week and write a list to ensure you only buy what you need.
  2. Keep a magnetic whiteboard on the fridge to keep note of the produce inside.
  3. Herbs and salad mixes go off quickly in the fridge, growing your own will not only stop food waste but also save on food miles.
  4. Be storage savvy – foods that are stored correctly will increase their longevity.
  5. Find recipes for cooking leftovers or freeze foods to use at a later date.

Limit your food waste. It truly will change the way you think about food forever.

TiVo

Place: lounge room

Poison: diet coke

Favourite things: bunches of iris’ for 4.50 each!!

This week I took the plunge towards the digital revolution that is burgeoning in Australia. I brought a TiVo. My life will never be the same again.

That is quite dramatic I know, and considering my former posts on consumerism, I must sound like a total sell out!

However there are some technologys that help our time management and life that they more than make up for themselves.

TiVo is basically a digital set top box that interfaces with re Internet to record shows and find what you like from free to air tv.

I had heard so much about it but never knew how much it can save money and time, by streamlining your tv viewing to only the shows you absolutely love.

So no more sitting watching stupid tv shows that fill your mind with junk and pessimism, but allowing u a choice to watch only that which you love and program.

Tivo and I are currently in a relationship.

For now anyway, until a new love comes along…

A living funeral

Place: bed

Poison: almonds

Favourite things: TiVo

I found a one dollar copy of ‘tuesdays with morrie’ last week and I couldn’t have brought a better bargain.

An adorable memoir of the dying days of a college professor, that has whet my appetite for living a life of inspiration.

In the first chapter he talks about going to a funeral of a work collegue and being bitterly dissappointed that friends and family had not said their thoughts to the deceased while he was alive.

So morris had an idea. I think if an Australian did this they would be shot down as egotistical, but I adore the concept.

Knowing his illness was terminal he held a living funeral, where he got to share stories, thoughts, poetry and love with those closest. A funeral for the living.

Don’t wait till someone passes away to share your thoughts and love freely. We regurally have toasts when we are with friends and family because we are determined to live our life saying what needs to be said.

John Mayers latest song says this ‘say what you need to say’ simple but true.

Morris I am looking forward to spending Tuesdays with you. Maybe I might only read this book on Tuesday evenings. If I can possibly wait each week.

Speak now.
